After coming down with a nasty flu a couple of months ago, I have made a conscious effort to be more healthy and give my immune system a bit of a boost. But sometimes it can be difficult to find the time (and money) to make healthy and nutritious meals at home. So I am always on the look out for affordable healthy options to eat out, or even take away.
I heard on the grapevine that Blendco have just opened a new store in my former stomping ground Hawthorn, so I couldn’t wait to check it out.
Blendco Hawthorn is the brain child of Morgan Cottee and James Lowthian, a couple of twenty- something guys that have a passion for healthy eating and nutrition. What started as a food truck (a restored old juice van bought from Gumtree) in Cremorne selling smoothies on the festival circuit has now taken a permanent residency on Glenferrie Road. The store was built over two months, with nothing but lack of sleep and a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Every piece of wood you see in the store was hand cut, stained and polished by one of their staff.
The cute space has only a handful of tables, so is designed for a quick meal or a takeaway option. It’s a very “grammable” spot with plenty of natural light and picture perfect food. The staff are super friendly and are more than happy to provide advice on what the best product is to fit your personal dietary needs.
The menu has a great range of blends which are coded according to colour. Choose brown – the affectionately named “Biggie Smalls” and you’ll enjoy a gorgeous infusion of coconut water, banana, almonds, cacao nibs, coconut, vegan protein powder and dates, or my personal favourite – the “Redhead” with coconut water, raspberries, blueberries, banana and mango
Blendco is all about making produce from premium, natural ingredients. Every ingredient used on the menu is 100% natural. No additives or preservatives here. All blends are also vegan and gluten free.
Three bowls ($12) are also available on the menu – acai, dragonfruit and baobab.
With a vibrant orange colour, the baobab bowl contains mango, banana, dates, coconut water and unprocessed, naturally formed Baobab powder. I had never tried baobab before so was impressed by its tropical flavour and delicate natural sweetness. Babobab fruit is a native to South Africa, rich in antioxidants, fibre, potassium, calcium and vitamin C.
Blendco Hawthorn also sell raw balls in a variety of flavours and a range of wholefoods to take home like nuts and grains.
There’s also rumours of winter warmers like hot chocolate and coffee hitting the store soon. I can’t wait to check that out when it does.
