• I’ve never been one for crowds and hectic New Year’s Eve celebrations. However …
  • The perfect escape at the Summer House

I’ve spent many a summer day in Torquay but some of my favourite times have been in the cooler months when you can get rugged up and have the beach to yourself, smelling the salty ocean spray whip through the air. Torquay is a great destination to explore all year round, with its many surf beaches, hikes, thriving dining scene and the scenic Great Ocean Road right on its door step.

Last week, I escaped to the beautiful Summer House in the sea side town of Jan Juc on the Surf Coast of Victoria. We were lucky enough to arrive on one of those crisp Autumn days with plenty of sunshine. I have been eyeing off this beautiful house on Instagram for a while and, trust me, it was so much better in person.

The Summer House is one of the oldest properties in Jan Juc and has been beautifully renovated to maintain its heritage and charm. It has four bedrooms and caters for eight guests.  The interiors have been decorated beautifully to maintain a modern beach aesthetic with cosy couches and armchairs,  rugs, cushions and art work. The living area is flooded with natural light with a bird’s eye view of the ocean beyond.

A modern Hampton style kitchen takes centre stage in the open living space, equipped with a gas cook top, electric oven,  dishwasher, wine fridge, butler’s pantry, microwave and large stone benches.

It’s a perfect house for entertaining with its large wooden dining table – ideal for large groups. On a sunny day you can perch on the gorgeous wrap around verandah, or, in winter, enjoy a wine or hot chocolate in front of the cosy gas log fire inside.

There are four luxury bedrooms – all consisting of king beds that can be split for either four couples or eight singles and two bathrooms (one ensuite) with double shower and restored roll top bath

There’s also a beautiful solar heated mineral pool with a water feature outside.

If you’re planning on hosting a nourishing and rejuvenating weekend retreat, the Summer House is definitely the place with facilities including a solar powered mineral salt and magnesium pool, and my personal favourite, the on site yoga zen studio equipped with yoga mats, meditation pillows and yoga blocks overlooking the picturesque buddha gardens.  Owner, Debbie Fowler, has sourced a range of highly trained holistic and wellness professionals to assist planning a tailored retreat including meditation, yoga, reflexology, massage, reiki, wellness coaching, mindfulness, stress management, psychic readings and essential oil programs.

Despite the great dining options in Torquay in surrounds, it’s also the perfect spot to order in to truly enjoy the property. The Summer House also offers an on site local catering delivery service and a gourmet chef experience. We had the pleasure of sampling the lunch picnic boxes from the super talented Sarah Roe Catering. Sarah grew up in country Victoria, where cooking and entertaining was an integral part of her childhood. She has since studied at Leith’s School of Food and Wine in London and worked as a boardroom caterer in Melbourne’s CBD before relocating to the Bellarine with her family. Each individual picnic boxes is filled with a chicken chive roll, smoked salmon wrap, vegetarian picnic pie, lemon curd cup and a sumptuous chocolate brownie.
Just take a look at her gorgeous picnic boxes!
