Royal Stacks Launch in Melbourne

Melbourne definitely isn’t a stranger to a good burger joint, and it doesn’t seem that our love of quality patties is going to disappear anytime soon. Royal Stacks is the latest burger joint to open in Melbourne, has opened its flagship store in Collins Street this week, much to the joy of CBD workers and students.

Dani Zeini, the burger mastermind behind Royal Stacks,  has travelled far and wide through the United States to find the formula for the perfect burger. And with successful ventures like Grand Trailer Park Taverna, Easey’s and Truck Stop Deluxe, we have all been expecting big things from his latest venture. I was lucky enough to be invited to the media launch last week to find out what Royal Stacks is all about…

Unlike most burger joints in Melbourne (particularly the CBD), Royal Stacks has a surprisingly large dining room, neatly packed with wooden booths and a long ordering counter top bar. It has an American diner atmosphere, with a modern twist; like an Australian style Shake Shack of sorts.  The stylish design has been nicely fitted out, complete with a pink neon burger sign and even an urban wall garden at the entrance to add a touch of greenery. It’s a handsome space.

Royal Stacks isn’t your average burger joint. The bread is baked fresh daily and the patties are made with GMO free, pasture fed beef (from Vic Meats) with no added hormones or antibiotics, and is minced fresh daily. State of the art chrome frills are used to produce consistently good burgers without the greasy residue.

The Royal Stacks menu has a nice range of burgers, ranging from the classic “Single Stack” to the gut wrenching burger fittingly named ‘The King,’ packed with a fat mac’n’cheese croquette (definitely not one for the faint hearted).  While bacon fans will love the ‘Bacon Bacon’ containing all Australian pasture fed beef patties, , double bacon, American cheddar, caramelised onion, American mustard, tomato sauce and pickles.

My personal favourite was the simple yet incredibly elegant Miss Elizabeth which comes with a nice beef patty, Swiss cheese and truffle mayonnaise, served in a fluffy white bun.

As far as sides go, there are all the usual classics like French Fries and ridiculously moreish potato gems. Or you can even make your own burger with additions like bacon, jalapenos and onion.

And let’s not forget about the 7 Apples frozen custard, which almost warrants a visit alone! Expect delicious  flavours like New York cheesecake, peanut butter and Kinder Surprise. It tasted remarkably similar to icecream or gelato to me, but whatever they are doing to it, it works. There’s also a great range of milkshakes and concrete shakes, made with their freshly churned frozen custard.

Royal Stacks will launch in Brunswick in February 2016, followed by a range of exciting locations to be announced. As you can tell we really enjoyed their burgers! Definitely fit for a King.
