Albert and Sydney is the latest bar to hit Brunswick’s buzzing Sydney Road. True to its name, the cocktail and wine bar is perfectly positioned on the corner of Albert Street and Sydney Road.

Formerly known as Albert St Food & Wine, the Albert and Sydney has undergone a major transformation, with a stronger focus on casual dining, cocktails and a heightened party atmosphere. Formal tables and chairs have been replaced  with high bar tables and American style open leather booths. At first sight the venue can look a little “confused”, pairing sophisticated features with more gritty, grungy features like graffiti and edgy bar seating. But this is the  juxtaposition with Albert and Sydney – curated cool on the Albert side meets classy contemporary on Sydney’s half – represented in both the bar’s décor and their menu. Street artist, Matthew Thompson, has given the bar a  quintessential Brunswick touch with the street art style graffiti wall.

Wine and cocktails are a definite focus on the menu. The ‘Sazerac’ teams rye whiskey with Peychauds bitters with an Absinthe rinse, while a ‘Ginger Ninja’ is the perfect accomplice for summer snacking, a unique mix of sake, Chartreuse, gin, lemongrass, lime and cucumber.

The menu is all about small plates designed to share. Diners can choose from a delicious range of options from standard pub fare like fish and chips and steak, to the more exotic pork bao and saganaki sliders. There’s also a great selection of cheese and charcuterie boards on offer, chock full of creamy cheeses, chorizo and serrano.
We started with the cauliflower fritters ($10) which were lightly battered, with a slightly crispy golden exterior. The fritters themselves were delicately seasoned, so a side of chipotle mayonaise was the perfect accomplice for dipping.

The confit duck sliders ($15) had great potential, chock full of roasted duck, house pickles and onion rings, inside a fluffy bun. However I felt the sliders needed a sauce or relish to add a bit of moisture and bring all the flavours together; without it the duck felt a little dry.

On the larger plates, a trio of lamb cutlets were nicely cooked, but the fat needed to be rendered down a little more. Served on a bed of mushy peas, with a touch of mint for a hint of freshness, the dish paired perfectly with the tomato salad.

We finished with one of their cheese plates (an assortment of three cheeses, quince and bread) which was just perfect with a glass of pinot! A great end to the evening!

Albert & Sydney is a great spot for post work drinks. They have a Happy Hour (or Happy Hours) from 5.00 – 7.00pm Wednesday through to Sunday every week as well as a fun Sunday session featuring live music.

I was invited as a guest of Albert & Sydney and Soda Communications. All views are honest and my own.

Thanks for the feedback! That’s an interesting point. I suppose there are many reasons, internal and external, why we do not accomplish all that we might. Regardless, I am thankful for the Lord’s grace in that. Thanks again!
