Nutella World Australia Launches

Nutella was one of my early loves as a child, a love that seems to have seamlessly extended into adulthood. I always ensure that there is a big tub of Nutella stocked in my cupboard. It’s always handy when the mood strikes for a bit of chocolate hazelnut goodness, topped on some fresh bread or a buttery croissant. If I am feeling a bit over indulgent, one of my all time favourite cheesecakes to whip up is Nigella Lawson’s Nutella Cheesecake.

I was recently invited to LaManna Direct for the delicious launch of  “Nutella World, 50 years of innovation”, a book dedicated to the world’s favourite hazelnut spread. Born in Alba, the same town in which Nutella originates, the author Gigi Padovani is a journalist and food writer whose book is more than a celebration of his hometown’s delicacy.

Nutella has come a long way from its humble beginnings in a pastry-shop in Italy seventy years ago; today it is now one of the largest confectionary groups in the world and a popular staple in many households. Now a whopping 350,000 tons of Nutella are produced every year, with over 11000 tons of this production coming from Lithgow in New South Wales.

It’s interesting to  hear the real story behind Nutella. The production of Nutella wasn’t planned; it was actually born by accident. In 1945, it was a small block of semi-hard chocolate-hazelnut mixture (Giandujot) that could be sliced and eaten with bread. However, the summer of 1949 was a particularly hot one in Italy and the Giandujot started melting! It was then that Ferrero realised that it could be reduced to a cream thus, and luckily for all of us, Nutella was born. The first jar of Nutella was made and sold in Italy in April of 1964.

Of course no Nutella event is complete without enjoying some hazelnut treats, and LaManna put on quite the spread with a decadent array of nutella pretzels, doughnuts and bread.
