As many of you know by now, I love my tea! So I was very excited to find out that Melbourne was opening its first blend-your-own tea store. Specialist tea exporter, Imperial Teas Group, has just opened Royal Elixir Tea Bar on High Street, Prahran, just around the corner from shopping precinct Chapel Street.
I was lucky to be invited to the launch and find out more about the art of crafting the perfect tea. The tea bar has been beautifully converted into a contemporary space with a tea tasting and blending table taking centre stage. Don’t miss the upside down tea lamp dangling from the ceiling.
Managing Director, Jayantha Karunaratne has been a master tea blender and taster for 35 years and was in store to tell us how to prepare personalised blends based on different tastes and aromas. A selection of 10 core teas are used for the base of the brew. But the real fun starts when you select flavours like orange, cinnamon and ginger to craft your own personalised brew.
If you’re unsure about what flavours go well together, just ask one of their chief blenders who can advise on the complementary flavours and even the health benefits of each ingredient.
Of course no tea bar launch is complete without a sumptuous tea infused snack, and chef Adam Liston put on quite the spread, including a Royal Elixir lemon balm tea cured trout on risotto cakes and a thyme infused pulled pork brioche cup with lemon and ginger pickle.
But of course my favourite was the lotus divine tea infused brownie, which was one of the most moist brownies I have ever tried. I am keen to try this at home with my lotus divine tea – so stay tuned for a recipe on my blog.
If you are a tea lover like me or a budding tea connoisseur don’t miss this little tea bar in Prahran.
Enjoy! Lisa xxx
