Top 10 foodie finds in Melbourne this week

1. South of Johnston, is without doubt, my new favourite cafe in Collingwood. What’s not to love about this hidden gem. Great coffee, seasonal produce , beautiful decor and a buzzing laid back atmosphere to boot. The space has been brilliantly executed,  strongly focussed on the seasons. They even have an urban orchard out front and a roaring wood fire place in winter. After sinking into one of their comfortable couches, the only problem is trying to leave.

2. If you prefer a different kind of church to spend your weekend, then try St ALi, ‘The Church of Secular coffee’ at Rue & Co – one of the hottest street food precincts to hit Melbourne. Expect A-grade coffee, a tasty breakfast menu and sweet treats like salted caramel-filled profiteroles.

3. For something a little heartier with your morning coffee, pop next door to  the Kong shipping container at Rue & Co. Tantalise your taste buds with mouth-watering dishes from the Korean barbeque. Fried chicken wings, kimchi  stew, smoked brisket and the ssam roti roll are some of the highlights.

4. If you’re after a quirky cocktail bar to spend your Friday evening, then add Caz Reitop’s Dirty Secrets on Smith Street to your hit list. The happy hour cocktails for just $12 are an absolute steal. The cosy booths, flickering candle light and vintage ornaments just add to the charm of the place.

5. Crabapple Kitchen on Glenferrie Road for its coffee and quality eats. I love their ‘Friday Night Flights’ concept where you can enjoy a holiday from the comfort of their own dining room. The travel inspired menu features small tastes from the most exciting food destinations around the globe. You could be foraging in Scandinavia one week and enjoying Spanish tapas the  next.

6. Whisky fans – look no further than Whisky and Alement to cure your whisky craving. This tiny bar on Russell Street has one of the most impressive whisky lists around, with nearly 500 on offer. The bartenders will be more than happy to educate you about all things whisky and the pleasures of the brown liquor. Make sure you try their hot buttered wine in time for winter.

7. Styled after a Krakow bar, Borsch, Vodka & Tears in Prahran specializes in Polish vodka, authentic wormwood absinthe and hearty Polish cuisine. Sit by the bar and soak up the charming bohemian atmosphere of yesteryear. Try one of their Turkish apple teas, served with pomegranate molasses and Medos honey vodka and a big bowl of borsch. If this doesn’t get your blood pumping, nothing will.

8. An easy peasy recipe for buttermilk scones with jam and cream – the ultimate afternoon indulgence.

9. Do the crowds at N. lee bakery ever cease? I think not. And for good reason, the family run business is still one of Melbourne’s cheapest eats for lunch. My tip – the banh mi roll.

10. Little Bean Blue on Little Collins Street for its house blend speciality coffee and its range of single origins from around the world. Definitely one of the best coffee spots at this end of the city.

Hi Lisa, great article, it is fantastic that you include venues from the suburbs! In Hawthorn look out for Lulo tapas and wine bar (funky, delicious Latin & Spanish place) & Izakaya jiro grill (lovely, amazing Japanese).
    Have a great weekend! !! 🙂

good blog, but have you tried a new place called BIlly Lane’s bar which is run by the same people that run the pool place in the city. They have awesome (and some gimmicky drinks) for about $10
Not much food but just drinks.
