Top 10 foodie finds in Melbourne this week

1. If you’re looking for an answer for your Thai street food craving in Melbourne , then think no further than Bang Pop on South Wharf. This is an ultra hip fit out – with its lego studded bar, hanging filament globes and colourful bicycles. Bang Pop’s menu is inspired by Thai Hawker style food so you can expect hawker stand staples like grilled pork neck and chicken spare ribs. The slow cooked red duck curry (Gaeng Daeng Phed) is to die for – literally falling apart from the bone. Let’s just say I will definitely be back soon to try more of their street food goodies.

2. It’s no wonder this bar features on so many best bar lists in Melbourne. The Everleigh Bar on Gertrude Street is everything a good cocktail bar should be – classy, sexy and full of well mastered cocktails. Don’t be put off by the cocktail menu – ordering here is part of the fun! Just tell the bartenders what your tastes are and they will whip you up something magical. With its cosy leather booths and candlelit tables it’s a perfect spot for an intimate date or a quiet catch up with a few friends.

3. At last a specialty coffee shop has arrived in Albert Park! Meet The Petty Officer, the little sister of AXIL coffee roasters in Hawthorn. They rotate single origin coffees daily, alongside their seasonal house espresso blend. For breakfast and lunch they serve up some delicious dishes using quality, locally sourced produce and pretty much everything is made on site. With the beach as a backdrop you couldn’t beat this location for a summer brunch spot.

4. Visit La Niche Café on Smith Street and you will feel like you have temporarily escaped to gay Paris. The cute and characterful café feels like a hidden oasis in the middle of Fitzroy. Make sure you come early in the morning to grab a coffee and one of their delicious pastries.

5. It’s good to see so many quality coffee joints popping up around Kew. Venture off the High Street, to Fenton Way on the cusp of a car park, and you will find Base Camp Espresso – an assuming hidden gem.  Their baristas serve up high-end espresso blends and single origins using their A class Slayer machine. On your first visit, you will feel like a true local – the service is super friendly.

6. Mr Wow’s Emporium in Smith Street is brought to you from the guys behind Lily Black’s and Double Happiness – so no doubt is sure to impress! Follow the mysterious popcorn smell upstairs and you will find a casual atmospheric bar with communal tables, pool tables and even a bocce pitch. When it comes to drinks, Mr Wow wants his guests to have a good time. Try the ‘Bearded lady’ – a delicate infusion of white rum, yellow chartreuse, lemon, orange, sparkling wine and fairy floss or, for something stronger, ‘The Firebreather’.

7. There’s a good reason why MART 130 is one of my favourite cafes in Melbourne. They do a great brunch and coffee with a location to match. Nestled in a converted stationmaster’s building on the fringe of Albert Park, it’s a perfect spot to relax on the alfresco deck and watch the world go by.

8. Truman Café is a super cute café in Albert Park full of vintage and industrial nic nacs. Lucky for locals, their food is also great. Who could go past the famous Truman breakfast of scrambled eggs, potato and leek hash served with avocado and Dulcie’s relish to start your morning?

9. The Spring Street Grocer for its mouth-watering array of gourmet produce. There is a sandwich bar, gelataria and even a cheese cave downstairs. Fellow foodies will be in heaven. It’s not cheap, but be assured its quality!

10. If you’re lucky enough to be a local of Prahran, you will be well familiar with Prahran Market. With so many high quality traders, there is always a wide choice for customers, including heirloom produce, hard to find specialties, artisan and organic produce. By shopping there, you will also know you are helping to support Victorian farmer’ and family owned businesses.
